MRSA is a strain of drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that is responsible for infections in both community and hospital settings. The bacteria is especially problematic for individuals with compromised immune systems and in areas where people are living in confined spaces.
Environmental sample collection for MRSA is generally performed using standard sterile swab kits with a buffered transport solution or using contact agar plates. Samples are transported to the laboratory on ice and analyzed upon receipt using a culture technique followed by identification/confirmation using a monoclonal antibody method.
